Introducing Te Reo Kahika

Posted on November 13th, 2015 by makahae.

Our Te Reo Kahika learning programme is an online resource to increase the level of Reo Mト{ri for the descendants of Te Kahika Marae Pト, and their families, regardless of where they live in the world.

Why it is Important

Our language is a taonga (treasure) handed down from our ancestors. We have a responsibility to ensure that we pass on this taonga to future generations. Learning Te Reo is more than learning to speak Mト{ri.

It is about:

  • Leaning tikanga / Kawa (Protocols / Practices)
  • Learning about the ways of our Marae
  • Learning ones whakapapa and identity

2014 Makahae Survey

In 2014, we surveyed Makahae whanau to find out more about what they know about our marae, our history and our language.

Key findings:

  • To many, Makahae Marae is home
  • Many are not familiar with the history of Makahae Marae or Ngト》i Tuheke but are interested in learning more about our history
  • Only 16% of whanau are fluent in Mト{ri. At least 70% consider that they are at a basic or learner level.
